Cibolo Man Stabs Himself in Courtroom After Receiving 12-Year Sentence

SEGUIN — A Cibolo man stabbed himself in the neck with a plastic knife Thursday afternoon immediately after learning his sentence in a child sexual abuse case, raising questions about how he got the weapon into the courtroom.

Charles Wyatt, 60, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for multiple charges including continuous sexual abuse of a child, possession of child pornography, and invasive visual recording. The stabbing happened in courtroom 201 at the Guadalupe County Justice Center in Seguin.

Guadalupe County Attorney David Willborn said Wyatt attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself multiple times with a polymer knife of undetermined origin.

Deputies from the Sheriffs office, along with County Attorney Investigator Victor Pacheco, were able to subdue Mr. Wyatt as First Assistant County Attorney John Amdur wrangled the weapon from Mr. Wyatt before he was able to further harm himself or anyone else in the courtroom, Willborn said in a statement.

Wyatt was not yet in custody as an inmate at the time of sentencing, and the stabbing occurred before bailiffs could take him into custody.

The sheriffs office said it is investigating how Wyatt possessed a weapon in the courtroom. As of Friday afternoon, Wyatt remained hospitalized.
