Nearly 30 pounds of meth-fentanyl mix seized after chase ends in Guadalupe River

A multi-county drug chase ended with a suspect jumping into the Guadalupe River near Seguin Monday, dumping a quarter-million dollars worth of drugs before being arrested.

According to KSAT, Christian Lopez, 20, was arrested Feb 9 after fleeing from Bexar County Sheriff's deputies into Guadalupe County with approximately 12.5 kilograms (27.5 pounds) of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The Chase

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office narcotics team received intelligence Monday morning that Lopez would be traveling through the county with a large quantity of drugs, Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a news conference.

When deputies attempted a traffic stop, Lopez fled in an orange Hyundai, leading deputies eastbound on Interstate 10 into Guadalupe County.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office deployed spike strips near Mile Marker 610 on I-10. Lopez then exited onto Highway 90 toward Seguin and stopped near the Guadalupe River Bridge.

Lopez fled on foot into the river, where he was seen dumping a backpack containing the drugs. With aerial support, Guadalupe County authorities detained Lopez approximately nine minutes after the chase began.

What Was Seized

The drugs tested positive for a mix of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Salazar said the seizure is worth an estimated $250,000, but could be worth double or triple that amount if divided and cut.

"I can tell you definitively: This drug would have killed somebody had we let it get out in the wrong hands," Salazar said.

Investigators believe Lopez is a "drug mule" with ties to a drug cartel based on the quantity seized.

Charges

Lopez faces two felony charges:

  • Manufacturing/delivering CS PG1/1B over 400 grams
  • Evading arrest/detention with a motor vehicle

The Texas Department of Public Safety and Seguin Police Department assisted with the chase. No injuries were reported and traffic impacts were minimal, according to the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office.
