Snowfest returns to Universal City Saturday with Clemens grad headlining

Universal City’s annual Snowfest & Carnival is back Saturday, Feb. 21 at Universal City Park — and this year the headliner is one of the area’s own.

Josh Varnes, a Clemens High School graduate who grew up in Universal City, will headline the live entertainment. Varnes moved to Nashville to pursue music full-time, signed with Label 22 Records, and released his debut album For Sale By Owner on Dec. 14. Before music, he worked as a traveling registered nurse.

“It’s a homecoming show,” Varnes posted on Instagram.

The event runs from 1 to 8 p.m. at Universal City Park, 305 North Blvd. Tickets are $20 per person and include a wristband for unlimited carnival rides and inflatables.

What to expect

Snowfest hauls in tons of manufactured snow for play areas and snow slides — a novelty in a city where February highs average in the upper 60s. The event started in 2010 with a single snow slide and a balloon artist, drawing about 800 people. It’s grown into one of the biggest annual events in northeast Bexar County, attracting thousands each year.

This year’s lineup includes:

Real snow play areas and snow slides
Unlimited carnival rides and inflatables
Ice skating rink
Petting zoo
Mechanical bull
Food trucks and local vendors
Mascot dance-off

Walmart’s Universal City Supercenter on Kitty Hawk Road is the title sponsor.

Getting there

Parking around Universal City Park fills up fast. The city is running free continuous shuttle service from noon to 8 p.m. from two locations:

Polly’s Pet Shop — 940 Pat Booker Rd.
First Baptist Church of Universal City — 1401 Pat Booker Rd.

The city says Universal City Police officers will be on the park grounds throughout the event.

Tickets

Tickets are $20 per person. Buy online at the city’s Snowfest page or at the gate day-of. Children who need wristbands for rides are the same price. Check the UC Snowfest Facebook page for updates.
